What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional Therapy aka OMT, myo therapy, orofacial myofunctional therapy.

Myofunctional therapy is a specialized exercise-based treatment that focuses on improving tongue posture, breathing, swallowing, and oral function. It helps address issues related to mouth breathing, tongue ties, improper swallowing patterns, and poor oral habits that can contribute to sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, speech difficulties, and orthodontic problems.

Key Focus Areas of Myofunctional Therapy:

Tongue Posture – Training the tongue to rest on the roof of the mouth instead of sitting low or pushing against the teeth.

Nasal Breathing – Encouraging nose breathing instead of chronic mouth breathing, which can affect facial development and airway health.

Swallowing Patterns – Correcting tongue thrusts and improper swallowing mechanics that may impact speech, digestion, and dental alignment.

Orofacial Muscle Function – Strengthening the muscles of the face, lips, and jaw to promote better oral function and stability.

Myofunctional therapy is a natural, non-invasive approach that helps people breathe better, sleep better, and function better by correcting improper oral habits. It’s often used alongside dentistry, orthodontics, sleep medicine, and speech therapy for holistic health improvements.
